Our family came back Monday from a camping trip in Lundy Lake, not too far from the better known Mono Lake. I will be honest and say that my diet was not stellar, but hey! we were on vacation. One of my favorite meals of the trip though, was the fish Mike made that my sisters and I caught. That I also gutted.
Mike taught my sister Rachel how to gut fish first, the day before I set out on my own fishing excursion with Rachel, Amber, and Billy. The morning we went, I caught two fish and later that afternoon, caught two more right there in Lundy Lake. I was dreading the moment where I would have to take a knife and cut the little guys open, but after experiencing some difficulty taking a hook out of a slimy, scaly fish’s mouth, I figured I couldn’t be more grossed out. I was wrong!
We made sure to make our sister Brooke document the entire incident so there are plenty of pictures of us with fish heads, pretending to kiss the fish, being really grossed out, and looking as though we were going to vomit, but in the end, we ended up gutting about 10 fish together. It was great sisterly bonding time. It felt AWESOME to know that we had caught our own dinner. Made us feel like we could have survived off the land if it came down to it. Besides, what’s more paleo than killing your dinner?
I can honestly say that gutting a fish is one thing CrossFit HADN’T prepared me to do, but I was plenty prepared for the ups and downs of the mountain trails that we hiked almost every day. I like CrossFit because it enables me to do things I REALLY love, like hike, but being able to say I caught a fish and then gutted it? I owe that to my dad!
